Working as part of The Pirbright Institute’s Vesicular Disease Reference Laboratory the EURL FMD aims to ensure high-quality Foot-and-Mouth Disease testing in the EU and support Commission activities on risk management and risk assessment in the area of laboratory analysis.


European Union Reference Laboratories (EURLs) are required to support and train the National Reference Laboratories of European Union Member States in the use and application of analytical and diagnostic techniques, provide the European Commission with scientific and Technical expertise in relation to laboratory analysis, and collaborate with competent laboratories in non-EU countries as defined in Regulation (EC) No 882/2004 (tasks, duties and requirements for all the EURLs). The EURL FMD is a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited testing laboratory #4025. The EURL FMD also organises an annual Proficiency Testing Scheme which aids other reference laboratories obtain and maintain their accreditation to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard.
